A theory is some explanation relating to 'how things work', that is relating causes to effects; I don't know what is your studies main subject, I am supposing in your dissertation you related facts, natural phenomena, human, animal behavior or historical events, all this is related in the way your theory works;
your theory will describe these relations and all evidence, experiments, empirical facts, mathematical theorems, etc.  to support those relations. An outline could just describe the main relation you discovered, and what eventually will your theory  predict that is still unseen or unknown, eventually adding only a brief phrase regarding  the supporting evidence you found.

I have never heard this term "major theory" before. I googled it and it is associated with the School of Music.
