Improve your research skills and become an independent learner When learning a language it is important to be able to find resources by yourself. Here’s a short activity you can try out today to improve your research skills. 1. Think of 3 topics that you are interested in or 3 questions you want the answers to and enter them into a search engine. They could be anything, from English grammar points you’re confused about to explanations about a specific scientific topic. 2. Look for the 3 most relevant links in the search results and read through their contents. Give each link a rating out of 5 stars according to how well they answered your question/explained your topic. 3. Do this for a few topics and select one link for each topic/question that you found the most useful. Make a list of these and now you have a short resource list to refer to! You could even find explanations or the answers to similar questions on these links that you’ve selected so it’s good to keep a list of them. 4. Do this every few days for a month and eventually, you’ll have a list of reliable resources for any topic/question you might have. When should you use 'can' and when should you use 'could'? 'Could' is the past tense of 'can' and is often used for simply indicating past tense. However, 'could' is also used for suggestions and requests. 1. 'You could try a new exercise routine.' (Suggestion) 2. 'Could you lend me your book for a few days?' (Request) Note: 'Can' is also correct for this question as it is used often in everyday English, but 'could' is more polite or more tentative. 'Can' is used for giving or refusing permission to do something. 1. 'Yes, you can borrow my book.' 2. 'No, you can't borrow my book.' Note: some people consider this usage of 'can' as incorrect and say that instead of 'can' you should use 'may'/'may not' (which is mostly reserved for very formal situations). These are only a few examples of when to use 'can; and 'could'. What are the benefits of keeping a language journal/diary? A language diary or journal is extremely helpful for learners of any language. Here are a few reasons why: 1. You can use it to note down any new words/phrases you learned throughout the day. 2. You can keep track of your progress. 3. You have something to refer back to whenever you need it during your language journey. 4. You have proof of your learning. This might not sound like a big deal but it can work to your benefit by showing your independence and learner autonomy. This is an especially strong point in favour of fresh graduates and students. 5. Most importantly, it helps you to maintain a schedule for your learning and to practice the language every day. 'Then' vs 'Than'? This is an example of words that often confuse people. 'Then' usually expresses a sense of time. It can be used as an adverb or an adjective. 1. We filled up the car and then began the trip. (used as an adverb) 2. The bill was signed by then President (or 'then-President') Ronald Reagan. (used as an adjective) 'Than' is a conjunction used to make comparisons. 1. I would rather eat than sleep. The two are easy to confuse, but with practice, one can learn to differentiate between them. 'Their' vs 'They're' vs 'There' What is the difference between these three? 'Their' vs 'They're' vs 'There' What is the difference between these three? 1. Their: this is the possessive form of the word 'they'. It is used to show ownership of something. "Their shoes became dirty from walking in the mud." 2. They're: this is the contraction or short form of the words 'they are'. It is easy to remember the meaning of this because it is the only one out of the three that has an apostrophe. "They're having guests over for dinner." 3. There: this is an adverb that indicates a place or a direction. It's easy to remember the meaning of this one since it contains the word 'here'. "It is freezing up there in mountains." Detective series (books) for improving your English

Sherlock Holmes is an extremely famous detective series. It is, however, a little hard to understand. I'm certain that a lot of you enjoy reading detective stories, but have some trouble in understanding the language they are written in. So here are 2 detective series (that are also very popular) that are easier to understand and will help to improve your reading skills, grammar and vocabulary. They are both written by the same author.

1. The Hardy Boys by Edward Stratemeyer

2. Nancy Drew by Edward Stratemeyer

I have shared these books mainly for students who are learning English, but the books have also been translated into many other languages so they are helpful for other language learners too.
