In this episode, I make some observations about different conversational styles among native and non-native English speakers. I am generalizing, of course, and these are just my thoughts, based on what I've experienced in my life. *

I'd love to hear what YOU think! What have you observed? 

Here are some questions you might want to talk to yourself or write about - as we reflect on the year that has ended. Maybe you want to create a short monologue by recording your thoughts in a voice memo on your phone. Or perhaps you could try writing down your ideas on your phone or on a piece of paper. Do it for 5 or 10 minutes, and don't worry about your grammar or vocabulary. Writing is a great PROCESS - an exercise where you can use your English - anywhere, anytime, without a teacher or a listener. So getting in the HABIT of writing or speaking to yourself is as important as the words you use. Over time, your skills will improve!

Imagine it is December 31, 2024. Using past tenses, write about what made 2024 a successful year for you. (This may feel strange, but it’s a great exercise for your English and for your mind! It can be fun and transformative, too!)

*Note - In this episode, I make the mistake of using the word "American" to refer to people from the US. This is a bad habit that I am (still) trying to break. The truth is that we are all Americans in the whole hemisphere - North and South. But, as they say, "old habits die hard" or existing patterns are hard to change.

4. How we speak with others & why we should talk to ourselves


في شمال إيطاليا، في بيرونا نحتفل بقدّيسة اسمها لوسيا. إنها أهم من قدّيس نيكولاس.

في يومي اثنا عشر وثلاثة عشر في ديسمبر، القدّيسة لوسيا تأتي على حمارها مع زميلها كاستالدو.

الأطفال يتركون قهوة للقدّيسة وطحينًا للحمار وخبزًا لكاستالدو. ينام الأطفال عندما تأتي القدّيسة، ويجب عليهم ألا يروها أو سترمي رمادًا في عيونهم ولن يستطيعوا الرؤية خلال مدة.

يقال إن شابًّا وقع في حبّ المُقدّسة عندما رأى عيناها. طلب الشابّ منها عينيها وأعطاها عينيه. ولكن أصبحت للقدّيسة عينان أخرتين وكانت معجزة. الشاب طلب منها مرة أخرى عينيها فرفضت وقالت إنها قد أعطته عينيها من قبل وهذه معجزة.

الشاب قتلها بطعن في القلب.

رُبما تعود هذه التقاليد إلى القرن الرابع عشر، عندما كان هناك وباء عيني وحشي للأطفال في مدينة فيرونا. بعد الوباء، قرر الآباء الذهاب إلى الكنيسة المخصّصة للقدّيسة بدون أحذية. الأطفال كانوا يخافون من البرد ولكن وعد الآباء بأن القدّيسة ستحضر لهم الحلوى والهدايا عند عودتهم إلى المنزل.

Karena di sini setiap hari hujan, ayo berbicara tentang hujan! 
Setiap negara punya cara berbeda untuk berharap supaya hujan tidak turun
Saya ingin memperkenalkan dua cara yang unik, satu dari Jepang, dan satu lagi dari Indonesia

Di Jepang, mungkin kamu pernah mendengar tentang teru-teru bōzu
Ini adalah boneka kecil berwarna putih, seperti hantu lucu, yang biasanya digantung di jendela
Anak-anak membuatnya ketika mereka ingin cuaca cerah, misalnya saat ingin pergi piknik atau ada acara olahraga. Boneka ini menjadi simbol harapan agar besok tidak hujan

Sementara itu, di Indonesia, terutama di Jawa, orang-orang juga punya cara tradisional untuk menolak hujan. Mereka tidak menggantung boneka, tapi memakai bahan-bahan yang ada di dapur, seperti cabai merah, bawang merah, hmm ini bukan resep masakan ya… haha… dan sapu lidi
Cabai merah dipercaya memiliki energi panas, yang bisa membantu mengusir hujan
Bawang merah digunakan karena aromanya yang kuat dan dipercaya bisa membantu menolak datangnya hujan
Sapu lidi juga digunakan, biasanya diarahkan ke langit sambil berdoa, dengan harapan bisa "menyapu" awan gelap
Cara ini bukan ilmu pasti ya, tapi bagian dari tradisi lokal
Biasanya, semua itu dilakukan saat ada acara penting, seperti pernikahan, supaya cuaca tetap cerah

Kedua cara ini menunjukkan bahwa manusia selalu punya harapan, dan cara sendiri untuk berkomunikasi dengan alam
Kita tidak bisa mengatur cuaca, tapi kita bisa punya harapan sederhana, semoga hari itu cerah dan berjalan lancar
