THE WORD THAT CATCHES EVERY VISITOR In Kerala a ഹോട്ടൽ is a modest restaurant. Not a place to sleep. നമുക്ക് ഹോട്ടലിൽ പോകാം means let us go and eat. A place to sleep is a ലോഡ്ജ് or a റിസോർട്ട്. THE THREE SETTINGS ചായക്കട the tea shop — small, benches, open very early, tea and fried snacks in a glass case. The cheapest, the most sociable, and the best place in Kerala to practise Malayalam. ഹോട്ടൽ the ordinary restaurant — meals at fixed times, fast service, shared tables. The core offering is ഊണ്, the meal: rice with several accompaniments at a fixed price with unlimited refills. റെസ്റ്റോറന്റ് the modern sit-down place with a printed menu and tax on the bill.
