Platon stiller ofte spørsmålet "Hva er noe?" i dialogene sine. Ved å stille dette spørsmålet får han ofte samtalepartnerne til å innse at de ikke har full forståelse av hva noe er, selv om de har delvis forståelse. Å være klar over sin ufullstendige erkjennelse er det første steget på veien til sannheten i filosofien. På samme måte som i antikken spør også dagens moderne idrettsfilosofer, i likhet med Platon, "Hva er sport?", eller mer presist, "Hva er god sport?". Et av Platon's beste svar på dette spørsmålet finnes trolig i grunnleggende konsepter i hans filosofi om den hierarkiske inndelingen av staten og menneskesjelen i tre deler. Siden sport stammer fra mennesket, kan også godheten i sport deles inn i tre stadier. Det laveste stadiet av sport svarer til den første delen av sjelen - den lystne sjelen. På dette stadiet er sport basert på å oppnå materielle goder gjennom premiene som vinnes i konkurranser....
