The working world has changed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, with new challenges for many employees and managers.

This year the focus of World Mental Health Day on October 10 is mental health in the workplace.

In the US, an estimated 1 million workers miss work every day because of job stress. And it's a similar situation in many countries around the world.

But there are lots of things we can do to help look after our mental health — and the mental health of our colleagues — when we're at work.

Experts from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have shared a few ideas, including simple things like saying "thank you" to others.

They also suggest practicing good "email etiquette." This means making your emails clear with an "accurate subject line," "concise summary" of what you're asking and a "clear timeline."

The mental health charity Mind says people should make sure they find time to take breaks. Many workers can take lunch breaks and perhaps other small breaks during the day and even a short time away from the desk can help you to feel a little better.

According to Harvard Business Review, managers need to understand that "work is about people, and people are messy and difficult."

This means understanding that employees all have their own challenges.

The first thing that managers can do, says psychologist Emily Anhalt, is show that they care about mental health in the workplace.

Making a difference to employees' mental health is not "a quick and easy thing," she said. It's a long journey — that might start on October 10, but it will need to last for years.

Welcome back, and you’re watching the Olympic Winter Games Review… and they are getting ready now… about to start the race… This will be a very exciting skiing event. Everyone is talking about it. Almost ready now… 

“Aaron… Aaron… Can you hear me? Or are you too busy watching TV?” says an angry voice. 

Aaron is a handsome black cat. Right now, he’s lying on the couch watching TV. His hands are on his belly and his head is on a pillow. 

His mother is standing over him. She looks upset and angry. She is wearing wet rubber gloves. 

“When will you stop?” says Aaron’s mother while looking for the TV remote. “You have been watching this show all day!”

She finds it under a pillow. She turns off the TV.

“Hey!” cries Aaron. “I was watching that! They were just about to start!” 

“I should tell your father. He won’t approve of this.”

Aaron sits up and grabs the remote from his mother’s hands. “Go tell him! I don’t think he will hear you. He’s in his bedroom watching TV too!” 

Aaron turns the TV back on and lies back down. 

Aaron’s mother breathes deeply and gives up. She goes back into the kitchen and continues washing the dishes.

Going Back to Japan

My Chinese friend Han and I finally had the chance to sit down for a conversation. He had asked to be on my podcast to share his experience as my student, but with our busy schedules and limited time outside of class, we kept putting it off or rescheduling for the past six months. こんばんは！Atsushiです。
みなさん、お元気ですか？
私は少しだけ、鼻がつまっています。
聞きにくかったらすみません。

北海道はかなり寒くなってきました。
わが家では、今日から石油ストーブをつけました。
北海道では、賃貸の家に、はじめから石油ストーブがついています。関西では、エアコンはほぼついていますが、ストーブはついていません。

家の中が結構寒くなってきたので、今日からストーブをつけることにしました。

さて、今日の本題です。
僕のレッスンを受けてくれている方から、おととい荷物が届きました！それはなんと、アメリカで売っているコーヒーでした。それのコーヒーは特別なコーヒーで、oak roasted coffee と書いてありました。日本ではoakは樫かし、と言います。樫の木で焙煎したコーヒー、ということですね、おもしろい！

日本では見たことがないコーヒーです。

今日、それをワクワクしながら、妻と一緒に飲みました！
ドリップする前のコーヒー豆は少しバニラのようなフレーバーで甘い香りがしました。そして、ドリップして飲みました。香りは少し、燻したようなスモークしたような香りがありましたが、飲んでみると香りの印象よりもマイルドで飲みやすいコーヒーでした。後味にかすかにスモークのような香りが残ったので、これがこのoakで焙煎している特徴なんだと思います。

とてもおもしろいコーヒーでした！
