描述
The class most heritage learners came for: a whole phone call home, in Malayalam. This is for anyone who grew up hearing Malayalam but never learned to answer back. You learn the vocative (അമ്മേ, അച്ഛാ, മോളേ, മോനേ), how to open the call, how to answer കഴിച്ചോ?, how to say you miss them and where you are, and how to close warmly. There is also a cultural note on why Malayali parents' questions are care, not an interrogation. Words and phrases in this class: ഹലോ അമ്മേ, സുഖമാണോ? (hello amme, sukhamaano?) – hello Amma, are you well? അമ്മേ (amme) – Amma (calling to her) അച്ഛാ (achchaa) – Achan (calling to him) മോളേ (mole) – daughter, dear (to a girl) മോനേ (mone) – son, dear (to a boy) കഴിച്ചോ? (kazhicho?) – have you eaten? കഴിച്ചു (kazhichu) – I have eaten എനിക്ക് അമ്മയെ കാണണം (enikku ammaye kaananam) – I miss you, Amma (I need to see you) എനിക്ക് വീട് ഓർമ്മ വരുന്നു (enikku veedu orma varunnu) – I am missing home ഞാൻ ലണ്ടനിൽ ആണ് (njaan londonil aanu) – I am in London വിഷമിക്കേണ്ട (vishamikkenda) – don't worry ഞാൻ നാളെ വിളിക്കാം (njaan naale vilikkaam) – I'll call tomorrow ഞാൻ വേഗം വരാം (njaan vegam varaam) – I'll come soon In this class: • The vocative: why Amma becomes അമ്മേ when you speak to her • Opening the call, and the കഴിച്ചോ? that always follows • Saying you miss them, the Malayalam way: the missing comes to you • Answering a parent's questions as care returned Quizzes below.
