만약 그때 다른 선택을 했다면…
고등학교를 졸업할 때쯤 나는 진로를 두고 고민이 많았다. 어릴 때부터 꿈꿔왔던 작가가 될지, 아니면 부모님의 기대에 따라 의대에 진학할지 결정해야 했다. 결국 부모님의 권유를 따랐지만, 지금도 가끔 그때 내가 다른 선택을 했다면 어땠을까 하는 생각이 든다.
만약 내가 작가가 되기로 결심했다면, 지금쯤 책 한 권쯤은 출판했을지도 모른다. 매일 도서관에서 글을 쓰고, 여러 문학 공모전에 도전하면서 문학의 길을 걸었을 것이다. 물론 경제적으로 불안정했을 수도 있지만, 하고 싶은 일을 하면서 살았을 거라는 생각이 든다.
하지만 현실은 다르다. 의과 대학에 입학한 후 매일 힘든 공부와 실습에 시달렸다. 처음에는 후회도 많이 했다. 만약 그때 의대를 선택하지 않았다면, 이렇게 밤을 새워가며 공부하지 않아도 됐을 텐데. 하지만 시간이 지나면서 나름대로 보람을 느끼게 되었다. 환자들을 치료하고, 그들의 감사 인사를 들을 때마다 의사로서의 삶도 나쁘지 않다는 생각이 들었다.
그러나 여전히 가끔은 글을 쓰고 싶은 마음이 든다. 만약 작가가 되었더라면, 나는 지금 어떤 삶을 살고 있을까? 물론 후회는 소용없지만, 가끔은 ‘다른 선택을 했더라면 어땠을까?’ 하고 상상해 보게 된다.
결국, 인생은 선택의 연속이고, 어떤 길을 가든 장단점이 있는 것 같다. 내가 선택한 길이 정답이라고 믿고 앞으로 나아가야 한다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 하지만 여전히 가끔은, 아주 가끔은, 원래 꿈꿨던 삶을 떠올리며 글을 써 본다.
그러던 어느 날, 오랜만에 책장을 정리하다가 고등학생 때 썼던 원고를 발견했다. 낡은 공책 속에는 순수했던 나의 꿈과 열정이 그대로 남아 있었다. 한 장 한 장 넘길 때마다 가슴이 이상하게 두근거렸다.
‘만약 그때 포기하지 않았다면, 나는 지금 어떤 사람이 되어 있을까?’
그 순간, 나는 깨달았다. 작가가 되는 길을 선택하지 않았다고 해서 글을 완전히 포기해야 하는 것은 아니었다. 의사로서 환자들을 치료하는 것도 중요하지만, 글을 쓰는 일 역시 내 삶의 일부로 남아 있을 수 있었다.
그래서 나는 다시 펜을 들었다. 진료가 끝난 후 짧은 시간이라도 글을 쓰기로 했다. 처음에는 일기처럼 짧은 글을 적었지만, 점점 더 많은 이야기가 머릿속에서 떠올랐다. 병원에서 만난 환자들의 이야기, 의사가 된 후 느낀 감정, 그리고 여전히 마음 한구석에 남아 있는 ‘만약 그때 다른 선택을 했다면’이라는 질문까지.
시간이 흐르면서 내 글은 점점 깊어졌고, 어느새 작은 문학 공모전에 도전할 용기도 생겼다. 비록 수상은 하지 못했지만, 다시 글을 쓸 수 있다는 사실만으로도 큰 행복을 느꼈다.
나는 이제 더 이상 ‘그때 다른 선택을 했더라면’이라고 후회하지 않는다. 대신, 현재의 삶 속에서 내가 할 수 있는 최선을 다하려고 한다. 의사와 작가, 두 가지 길을 모두 걸어갈 수도 있음을 깨달았기 때문이다.
어쩌면 인생은 우리가 예상한 대로만 흘러가는 것이 아닐지도 모른다. 중요한 것은 후회하지 않고, 주어진 상황에서 새로운 길을 만들어 가는 것이 아닐까?라고 생각해 본다.

In an executive order signed on January 20, President Donald Trump instructed the US attorney general to pause enforcement of the US ban on TikTok for 75 days while his administration decides the platform's future.

US officials and lawmakers have long been concerned that TikTok's ownership by the Chinese company ByteDance poses a threat to national security. Under a federal law passed in Congress last year and upheld by the Supreme Court last week, ByteDance was required to sell the platform to an approved buyer by January 19 or face a nationwide ban.

On the evening of January 18, a few hours before the ban took effect, TikTok became unusable for US users. But it came back online the following day, after Trump said on social media he would order the ban to be paused.

However, Trump's order could face legal challenges because he does not have the power to overturn a law that Congress has passed and the Supreme Court has upheld.

Nevertheless, Trump's order will buy time for ByteDance and TikTok to figure out their next move.

Trump has proposed terms in which the US would have a 50% stake "in a joint venture" with ByteDance, but it was unclear how this would work.

Trump has also not addressed whether he will allow ByteDance to keep controlling the algorithm that controls what users see on TikTok. The algorithm is maintained by ByteDance engineers in China and is one of the main concerns among supporters of the law.

After the law was passed last year, ByteDance fought a legal battle against it for months. ByteDance and TikTok have not said whether they are willing to cut ties with each other within the new 75-day extension period.

On January 21, Trump was asked whether he's installed the app on his phone. The US government has banned it from federal devices due to concerns it could lead to spying by Chinese intelligence agencies.
