「ではすぐ今の次。はいっ。」
　そらと思って弾き出したかと思うと いきなり楽長が 足をどんと 踏ふんで どなり出しました。
「だめだ。まるでなっていない。このへんは曲の心臓なんだ。それが こんな がさがさしたことで。諸君。演奏までもうあと十日しかないんだよ。音楽を専門にやっているぼくらが あのかなぐつかじだの砂糖屋のでっちなんかの 寄り集りに負けてしまったら いったいわれわれの面目はどうなるんだ。おいゴーシュ君。君には困るんだがなあ。表情ということがまるでできてない。怒るも喜ぶも 感情というものがさっぱり出ないんだ。それにどうしても ぴたっとほかの楽器と合わないもなあ。いつでも きみだけ とけた靴くつのひもを引きずって みんなのあとをついて歩くようなんだ、困るよ、しっかりしてくれないとねえ。こうきあるわが金星音楽団が きみ一人のために 悪評をとるようなことでは、みんなへもまったく気の毒だからな。では今日は練習はここまで、休んで六時には かっきりボックスへ入ってくれたまえ。」
みんなはおじぎをして、それからたばこをくわえてマッチをすったり どこかへ出ていったりしました。ゴーシュは その粗末な箱みたいなセロをかかえて 壁の方へ向いて口をまげてぼろぼろ涙をこぼしましたが、気をとり直して 自分だけ たったひとり いまやったところを はじめから静かに もういちど弾きはじめました。
