The Umbrella Man - Part two

Questo fine settimana Jimmy è voluto andare a Milano per un paio di giorni. Milano e Venezia sono abbastanza vicine, quindi si può viaggiare in treno. Venerdì pomeriggio Jimmy è arrivato alla stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia (questo è il nome della stazione) con un piccolo bagaglio. Il bagaglio sono le borse e le valigie con cui partiamo. È andato subito in biglietteria per comprare il biglietto del treno.

Il bigliettaio, cioè la persona che vende i biglietti, gli ha chiesto: “buongiorno, desidera?” Jimmy ha risposto “vorrei un biglietto per andare a Milano, per cortesia.”

“Quando desidera partire?” ha domandato il bigliettaio.

“Subito” ha detto Jimmy. “Vorrei partire con il primo treno.”

“Facciamo un biglietto andata e ritorno?” ha chiesto di nuovo l’impiegato.

Jimmy non sapeva il significato di “biglietto andata e ritorno”. Allora il signore della biglietteria glielo ha spiegato: “il biglietto di andata e ritorno è un biglietto unico per partire e per tornare.” Jimmy ha capito: “sì, adesso capisco. Facciamo andata e ritorno. Vorrei tornare a Venezia domenica sera.” 
Il bigliettaio ha fatto un’altra domanda: “vuole viaggiare con un treno regionale, un intercity o con il treno ad alta velocità?”

Jimmy non capiva di nuovo! “Mi scusi, qual è la differenza?”

Il bigliettaio glielo ha spiegato: “Il treno regionale è un treno molto lento che fa tutte le fermate ed è anche il più economico. Il treno intercity fa solo le fermate delle città più grandi e ha un prezzo medio. Il treno ad alta velocità viaggia a 200 km orari e fa solo 2 o 3 fermate. È velocissimo ma è anche il più costoso.”

Jimmy ha scelto subito: “vorrei viaggiare con il treno ad alta velocità perché voglio arrivare in fretta.” Il bigliettaio ha stampato i biglietti e li ha dati a Jimmy. “Sono 60 euro in totale. Il treno parte dal binario numero 10 fra 15 minuti. Arrivederci.” Jimmy ha pagato, ha salutato, ha preso i bagagli ed è andato verso il binario 10 per salire sul treno per Milano.

MARIA: Yes. She looks amazing. And the groom is so romantic. 
I just heard the story of how they got engaged! He 
proposed to her during a candlelight dinner in London. 
Did you know that was where they went to school?
ANGELICA: Oh? Wonderful. And the honeymoon! What a great 
idea! Most people just go to the beach for a week 
after they tie the knot. But they plan on heading to 
California and cruising the coast on their motorcycle.
MARIA: Really! What a fantastic idea. This is by far the best 
wedding I’ve ever been to



LANGUAGE NOTES
• Doesn’t …? When you have a negative question, the expected answer is “yes.” As 
such, it expresses the exact opposite of what is being conveyed (i.e., the bride DOES 
look absolutely beautiful).
• Listen to the stress on honeymoon. There are three syllables in “honeymoon,” with the 
stress on the first syllable [HO-ney-moon]. This content word is culturally important, so 
it’s emphasized: It means a trip or vacation taken by a newly married couple.
• Tie the knot is an informal way of saying “get married.”
• Can you find and explain the two usages of just in this dialogue? “Just” is an adverb 
that can be used in two different ways:
 a) To indicate a very recent past (I just heard the story). When used to convey 
time, “just” is commonly used with a simple past verb because the action is 
complete. Sometimes it can also be used with the present perfect (He’s just 
finished writing a book).
 b) To indicate contrast or emphasis (Most people just go to the beach). In that 
case, “just” can be replaced by “simply” and emphasize the word it relates to 
(a verb, adjective or other adverb) by denoting contrast. Compare the following 
sentences: “They just got married yesterday” (adverb of time). “The wedding 
reception was just wonderful” (adverb of emphasis).
