Hello to all of you! I’m Ann, and I was born in a town in Iloilo, about 30 kilometers away from the city. Our home was surrounded by a small coffee plantation, with trees like mango, coconut, cacao, and many other tropical or native fruits — it really felt like paradise! We also had plenty of animals around — chickens, geese, ducks, goats, pigs, cows, and even a carabao — and a small rice field. That was my childhood — simple, yet full of joy and natural beauty.

Now, I carry those memories and stories with me here on the podcast Ma-HILIGAYNON Ta!

I still clearly remember how we used to walk about 3 kilometers just to get to school when my siblings and I were in elementary. It was only when I got to high school that we moved closer to the highway. During the rainy season, we’d walk barefoot through rice paddies and small streams, carrying our school shoes and supplies. We would wash our muddy feet in a little stream beside the road before waiting for our favorite tricycle driver to pass by and take us to school.

You know, it’s only now that I realize how tough that was — but back then, it all felt like fun. I never even thought of it as difficult, especially for young schoolgirls like me.

We had a very loyal dog — his name was Burgo. He looked like he came from a police breed, maybe part German Shepherd mixed with a native dog. He was a gift from my grandfather. He was my companion through every silly adventure and farm chore.

El origen náhuatl (tequitl: trabajo u oficio; tlan: lugar) de la palabra, habla de un lugar de trabajo. Sin embargo, una versión complementaria sobre el origen de la palabra tequila hace referencia a la piedra que es típica de esa región, obsidiana, y que se tallaba para usarse como herramienta. Estas piedras se conocía por ese tiempo como tecatlis y por ende a quien la manejaba se le llamaba tecuilo. Así por costumbre al lugar se le comenzó a llamar Tecuila y posteriormente Tequila.
Entre las leyendas que explican el origen de la bebida, existe una que dice que el tequila se descubrió durante una tormenta eléctrica, cuando un rayo cayó sobre un sembradío de agaves y dada su intensidad, esto originó un incendio, donde posteriormente los vapores calentaron las bolas de agave, ocasionando que de ellas emergiera una miel de sabor dulce y aroma agradable que llamó la atención de los nativos; quienes descubrieron que al fermentarse, ésta tenía poderes relajantes y efectos de euforia al beberla.

En las primeras décadas después de la conquista, nació la bebida como un fermentado de la planta de agave y posteriormente, con su influencia árabe e hispánica se destiló en alambiques introducidos al continente.

Durante muchos años se le conoció como vino de mezcal o mezcal tequila, ya que mezcal era uno de los nombres del agave.

Y en la historia se cuenta que los primeros en darle el nombre de tequila a la bebida fue uno de los productores más importantes para la industria del tequila Don Cenobio Sauza, que cambió el nombre de vino mezcal de tequila a tequila.
