[Beginner]From Silence to Speaking | Language Learning Mindset 

Narrator: Queen Elizabeth the First was born in 1533. Her father, King Henry the Eighth, was disappointed that his second wife Anne Boleyn had not produced a son and he had Anne’s head cut off when Elizabeth was only two years old. Elizabeth received the same education that a son would have and studied classical and modern languages, history and religion.

Narrator: When Henry died in 1547, Elizabeth’s younger brother Edward briefly became king, but on his death in 1553, her older sister Mary took over. Mary was a Catholic and wanted to bring England back into the Catholic faith after her father had broken with the Catholic Church and the Pope in Rome. She tried to achieve this by force and had 300 Protestants burnt at the stake. When “Bloody Mary” died childless in 1558, Elizabeth became queen.

Narrator: The first challenge Elizabeth faced was to bring the country together after the religious conflicts it had experienced during Mary’s rule. The Church of England that she set up occupied a middle ground between the Catholic and Protestant faiths and allowed some freedom in people’s personal beliefs as long as they attended church regularly. This saved England from further violence, although there were constant threats from both sides.

Narrator: Elizabeth was very skilled at presenting an image. She had many pictures of herself painted wearing expensive clothes and jewelry as well as makeup to make her face look pale, sometimes showing herself as a goddess or other figure from classical myths. She traveled around the country regularly on horseback so she could see and be seen by her people, who were very loyal to her.

Narrator: Elizabeth never married. Many men both at home and abroad wanted to marry her, but she played them off against each other. This meant she could avoid taking sides in various domestic and foreign political and religious conflicts, but it also meant that when she died, there would be no clear heir. She saw herself as married to the country...

0002: What to See and Do in Glasgow

会 (huì) means "to be able to" or "to know how to." It is used to describe a specific skill or ability that someone has. For example:
我会说中文。 (Wǒ huì shuō Zhōngwén.) - I can speak Chinese.
可以 (kěyǐ) means "to be allowed to" or "to have permission to." It is used to describe whether someone is allowed or permitted to do something. For example:
你可以坐这里。 (Nǐ kěyǐ zuò zhèlǐ.) - You are allowed to sit here.
能 (néng) means "to be able to" or "to have the ability to." It is used to describe a general ability or capability that someone has. For example:
我能做这件事。 (Wǒ néng zuò zhè jiàn shì.) - I am able to do this.
In general, 会 is used to describe a specific skill or ability that someone has, while 可以 is used to describe whether someone is allowed or permitted to do something, and 能 is used to describe a general ability or capability that someone has.

Today I’m going to talk about Kanji “一(ichi)”. 
One day one of my students said to me, “Kanji is difficult because they have a lot of way to read. For example, “一（ichi）” is very simple and easy, but it has so many ways to read.”
 I totally agree with her. Even native speakers of Japanese sometimes misread kanji. Then, what kind of reading and meaning does Kanji ”一” have?

日本語の漢字は　一つの漢字に　いくつかの読み方があります。
それが、漢字が難しいと感じる原因になっています。
このあいだも、きょねん　N3に合格した　生徒さんが　こんなことを言っていました。
「一」	はむずかしいです。読み方がとてもたくさんあって、たいへんです。
本当に　たくさん読み方があると思います。
一月（いちがつ）と　一月（ひとつき）は　漢字で書くと同じになってしまいます。ですから、日本人は書くときに　一月は漢字で、ひと月は「一」をひらがなで「ひと」と書いたり、同じ意味の「一か月」と書いたりします。

一年	一月　一日　一番　　は「いち」
一個　一回　一瞬　一品　は「いっ」、「い」に小さい「っ」がつく「「いっ」
一つ　一口　一休み　一言　は「ひと」
唯一　均一　統一　単一　は「いつ」
むずかしい読み方では、「一昨日」と書いて「おととい」　、「一昨年」と書いて「おととし」、「一寸」と書いて「ちょっと」と読むなど　ほかにもいろいろあります。

そして、「一」の意味は「ひとつ」という数を表すだけではありません。
「世界一」の「一」は　最上のもの　一番上のものという意味、
「一瞬」の「一」は、少し、わずかという意味です。
日本によくある100円ショップは100均（ひゃっきん）と言われています。
この100均は100円均一の略で、「均一」の「一」は　一つのまとまり、あつまり、一つのグループという意味です。　だから100均は100円の商品だけをあつめたお店ということになるんですね。
ほかにもいろいろありますが、全部は紹介できないので、興味のある人は辞書で調べてみてくださいね。

ここまで聞いてくれた人の中には、たぶん、漢字の読み方の「覚え方のコツはありますか？」「何か読むときのルールはありますか？」と思っているのではないでしょうか。

残念ながら、こうやれば覚えやすいという方法もルールもありません。
日本人も読み方がわからなかったり、間違えることがあります。
辞書で調べて　確認して、一つ一つ覚えるしかありません。

めんどうくさいかもしれませんが、知れば知るほどおもしろくなるのが漢字の世界だと思います。　ぜひ、楽しんで学習してください。
