Subsequent is an adjective and aftermath is a noun.
So "subsequent events" has the same meaning as "aftermath".

‘Aftermath’ has a special meaning that ‘subsequent’ doesn’t. ‘Aftermath’ is the state after a negative event that caused a change. ‘Subsequent’ just means ‘next’.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, 500 people are homeless.
The lessons have cost $10 until now. Subsequent lessons will be $12.
