Hello, Valentina.
Could you tell me where you’ve heard of “do preparations”? Was it used by a native English speaker?
The only collocation I know is “make preparations for smth or to do smth”.
You can also say that somebody’s in preparation for something else.

Use DO for actions, obligations, and repetitive tasks.
Use MAKE for creating or producing something, and for actions you choose to do.
do the housework
After I got home from the office, I was too tired to do the housework
make money
I enjoy my job, but I don’t make very much money.
My uncle is making preparations for his birthday celebration in next month
