Hi everyone, what is the difference between select and choose? How would you use each? Thanks :)

Good question! the two words are very close in meaning. The difference is subtle in American English. “Select” is a bit more formal , not often used in casual conversation. Also, it often refers to choosing one of a small and specific set of options. For example:“ Select a color from the 3 that are displayed.” “Select a time for your English lesson from the following schedule.” “Choose” is more commonly used and more casual. I hope this helps!

They are definitionally pretty similar but colloquially we use “choose” more when presented with a set of options and we are deliberating which to pick. It is the action taken as a result of a presented choice. Selecting is a bit more formal and operational. “It’s up to you. Whatever you choose to do is your decision.” “Select a dish from the menu below”

¡Hola, Maria! ¡Visité Costa Rica año pasado y me encantó ! Select can be somewhat more formal, as in “select a class or select your investments” Choose (or pick) may be more commonly used. I picked this shirt Or I will choose this shirt
