How common is to say man a telephone (man the telephones)?

I don't think I hear that expression used very often, but it makes sense and sounds natural. I searched in the dictionary and found a few examples. One of the examples included phones.
1. He stocked shelves while I manned the cash register.
2. We'll need someone to man the phones this evening.
3. No one was manning the front desk.
