Hi! What is the difference between «on one’s own» and «oneself»? (He did it himself / on his own)

These are very similar. 'He did it on his own,' sounds like a more lengthy task was completed. Examples; He has tied his shoe. He did it himself. He has bought a car and moved into an apartment. He has done it on his own.
