Hi guys, I need help ! I’m considering starting learning Arabic in October but as I was taking a look at the language I saw that there are many Arabic dialects and accents. If I were to learn Arabic, which version should I go for? I’ve seen that there is something called “the standard Arabic” but not many people speak this version of the language in their daily lives. I would be very thankful if someone could help me with it.

Hello Davi I’d be glad to help you Well Arabic is divided into the standard Arabic (which is the original version) and nearly every Arab understands it ,it’s used it in book writing speeches formal letters formal talk and news (it’s the one that’s being taught at schools) it’s the Arabic that have strict grammar and spelling The second one Spoken Arabic or dialect it differs according to your region ( it’s taught by the society and used in everyday speech)most Arabs understand Egyptian and Levantine dialects because they’re frequently used in tv shows and series If you’d like to learn any of them I’d will be more than happy to help And for more information feel to ask whatever you want

There are five basic dialects in the Arab countries. 1. The Levantine dialect: It is spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine, and it is the most widespread, due to the situation in Syria today. Most of the people you will meet today in the world are Syrians. It is a dialect widely spread in the Arab world also because of television series, and the presence of native speakers in all Arab countries. 2. The Egyptian dialect: It is spoken in Egypt, a dialect that is also widely understood by all Arabs, because of the Egyptian films that Arabs watch, and because Egypt is one of the great Arab countries, and it has a great history. 3. The Gulf dialect: It is spoken in Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman. 4. The Moroccan dialect: It is spoken in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, This dialect may be difficult to understand for Arabs in the Arab East, but it is a lovely and pleasant accent when speaking. 5. The Iraqi dialect: It is spoken in Iraq, and it is close to the dialects of neighboring countries (the Levantine dialect and the Gulf dialect), and is widely understood by both. In short: I advise you to learn the the standard Arabic, because all Arabs understand it, so you can communicate what you want through it, and they also can communicate to you what they want in formal language. Then you can learn the dialect spoken by the people you most expect to see.

As they said above if it not for educational purposes, I'd say go with the Egyptian dialect everyone will understand it and its more simple not like bahrain's dialect which where I'm from even when I speak to Arabic people I have to choose my words so they can understand me. Plus there is an app called language transfer they have a good course give it a shot

Hi Davi - What is your reason for learning? Are you traveling to a particular region and you want to chat with locals or will you be reading articles/newsletters . MSA would be too formal for daily conversation. As mentioned Egyptian Arabic is widely understood so that is always a good choice if you don’t have any particular regional dialect that will be required.
