Tomas Both sentences are correct, and there is not any difference between the two sentences. The verb "wait" suggest that a period of time will pass, so in the first sentence, "Did you have to wait long" the adverb "long" implies or suggests "a long period of time", so it is not necessary to include "for a long time". However, including "for a long time" is fine and adds a little more emphasis to the long period of time of waiting. I hope this helps a little.

Both are correct. Personally, I would use the first one and then the second one I would use if I’m embarrassed that I made that person wait (make them aware that I know and I feel bad) or I’m trying to be super proper. Day to day in American English the first works great.

Tomas, As for me, there is no right answer... So, wait is a verb of sense, so we have to use with them the verb have - Have you been waiting for a long time? Or, at least, if You mean the obligation for person waiting - Did You have to wait for a long time? and I shall add "for me" or Did You need to wait...?
