My friends knew him. My friends' parents knew him. My teachers knew him. The janitor knew him. ("Hey, how ya doin', Auggie?" he'd always say, and give August a high five.) August was something of a fixture at PS 22.
What does fixture and Ps 22 mean here?

A ‘fixture’ is something that is permanent. Here it means that the person is well-known and is associated with the place.
PS means ‘public school’. New York City uses a numbering system for its primary schools. While this is not common in the US (and even in NYC schools have names as well) New York has such a cultural importance to the US that this is widely known.
