What is the difference between "agree and agree upon"?

My first thought . . . . they both mean approximately the same thing, however AGREE does not need an object, whereas AGREE UPON does need an object.
Examples:
I'm glad we agree.
I'm glad we agree upon the best plan of action.
It's also pretty common to see the phrase AGREED UPON as a descriptor.
Ex. Don't try to back out of our agreed upon contract.
