I would say that occupation is a job, i.e. your duties that you perform there. And profession is you skills or education.

Not everyone has a profession, but everyone has an occupation. If you do an unskilled temporary job that you haven't trained for, this is your occupation, but not your professsion. Your occupation is what you do. The word 'occupation' often appears on forms, because it covers all sorts of situations where people don't have paid jobs. For example, if you are a 'carer' who looks after a relative full-time at home, this is your occupation.

Your occupation is what you do for a living.

A profession is the name used to refer to certain prestigious occupations  e.g. doctor, engineer, architect, writer, artist, accountant, lawyer, etc.  Professional training normally takes longer than for 'regular' occupations, makes more demanding requirements, and may be very expensive.
