I've never visited Italy. Because Italy is so much a part of British culture, because there are so many Italian-Americans in the United States, and because I've seen it so much in movies, I do have a collection of ideas and stereotypes.
Venice, gondolas, the Bridge of Sighs.
Rome, the Colosseum, the Pantheon. The Fountain of Trevi (because of the song and movie, "Three Coins in the Fountain.")
"See Naples and die."
Beautiful outdoor light and scenery that painters have always loved to paint.
Pasta in the south and rice in the north.
Aggressive drivers.
Dante Alighieri.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Galileo Galilei.
The Uffizi Gallery, and, generally, more paintings and sculpture in one museum than you can see in practically all of the United States.
Italian opera. Organ-grinders with monkeys (probably not, but it's part of my mental image).
Sophia Lauren. Gina Lollobrigida. Marcello Mastroianni. (I'm old.)

I've been to Rome and I have to admit, I loved it very much. My only disappointment was a great amount of bothering sellers trying to push you all kinds of crap.
