Responding to 'I love you, I miss you' etc.

Opinions wanted people, if you say to someone 'I love you' or 'I miss you' what is the appropriate response on their part if they want to say that they reciprocate how you feel?

I would say 'I miss you too/I love you too.' The reason I ask is that recently on two separate occasions I have said 'I miss you' to someone and their response has been 'me too.' Now both the people in question are native Spanish speakers so of course it could be a mistake on their part. Going on gut instinct, it just doesn't feel right to say that. If you say 'me too' it feels like they are saying they miss themselves too, which is of course nonsense. I was fairly confident it was a mistake to respond this way, only to find spirited debate online on forums, where some native English speakers seemed to be of the opinion that 'me too' is an acceptable response to a statement like 'I miss you.' So, put my mind at rest. Or not, as it may be and let me know what you think.

Lazy is as lazy does.

"Me too" is often a lazyman's way of saying "I feel the same/I feel the same way as you/etc."... but you already know that.

However, there may be occasion when one might say the shorter "me too" because (1) they are too shy to utter the more emotive words "I love you too or I miss you too" or (2) they simply may not have the same sentiments, or (3) it's easier to say the shorter "me too" for a non-native speaker.

Saying "me too" is quite common in the US and in Canada, but it is neither romantic nor welcomed.

Nice to see that you're back. Your profile pic is one of my all-time favourites...

'So do I' has the same meaning as 'Me too', so it creates the same problem. In fact, I think that 'So do I'  - with its use of the auxiliary verb to echo the main verb of the original statement - suggests that you're missing yourself (!) even more than 'Me too' does.

I agree with you, Paul.

Responding to the statement "I miss you" by saying "Me too" makes no sense  - you're saying that you also miss you! It's nonsense. The only logical response along these lines is "I miss you, too".  As Thomas suggests, it could be a 'yo tambien' thing.

When I saw the title, I thought the discussion would be about that if we really need to say that we have missed them too or not! :D Because I always have problem with that!

Sometimes if I really haven't missed the person I'd say "Aw! Thank you!" in response. Does it make any sense in English?
