The Netherlands have just passed a new law that automatically makes all Dutch citizens organ donors. Those who do not want this must register with the government as a "non-donor". That's exactly the opposite of how it works in most countries.
What do you think of this new law? Will it save more lives? Will it help stop the illegal international trade in human organs?
Would you be happy is this were also a new law in your country?
I doubt the Dutch will 'raise hell' about this. There seems to be a certain sense of solidarity in Holland, Denmark, the Scandinavian countries that is both admirable and a bit concerning to Americans.
I plan on using my organs to the edge of exhaustion, making them unfit for harvest and future use. Particularly my liver, which we all know is an evil organ and must be punished. But I do have a donor card.
My life is full of contradictions.
This turns the idea of "good will" on its head. Acting good becomes a standard this way, but then it's suddenly only just that - a standard. Making it so that opting out requires extra effort and a decision, will make it seem like someone does not want to help. I can totally see people running around, saying "Oh, did you choose NOT to help all those potential people on waiting lists? Shame on YOU!"...
I think everyone has the right to die in peace and be left undisturbed. Dutch people now have to ask for that.
Instead of forcing it, why not promote it? Why not advertise it; why not make people conscious about it?
The only reason why this law will increase the number of organ donors is not because people suddenly become so supportive of the idea but because some of them will be pressured on a social level to accept it. Or simply because they won't care to go the extra mile to unregister.
I think this movement is unethical, no matter what's the cause or reason. You can't expect a whole nation of people to do something. Everyone should have the free will to decide whether they wish to really take part in it instead of having to decide whether they don't want to.
It's not the same.
Don't get me wrong, donoring organs is a remarkable act, but this way of going about it really turns me away from it. Very interesting nonetheless..

We only need one kidney. Maybe it's a good idea for the state to harvest organs from the living without their permission.
Am I the only one to see the logical progression of this dictatorial abuse of power?
This is not new. Austria has an opt out system. I think it is fantastic.
My understanding is that even if you are a tourist/visitor (not a resident/citizen) and die in Austria, your organs may be harvested.
You can't take them with you when you go.
