Can anybody tell me how we say "social worker" in Spanish?
Also I would like to know how we can say : "this elderly person can no longer stay home by herself due to old age"

And finally: if someone takes care of an elderly person on a full time basis, we call this person a "caregiver". How do we say it in Spanish?

In Spain we do call “cuidador” or “cuidadora” those people whose job is to look after a person (elderly or young, it doesn’t matter.

Hi Serge,

In Spanish we call it "trabajador social" and a caregiver would be "cuidador". As for the sentence you are not sure how to translate, I would say: Esta persona mayor ya no puede quedarse sola en casa debido a su edad avanzada".

Yesterday I was reading an article that included the word "cuidadores". It was a translation from the English "caregiver". I checked both the English original and the Spanish translation. In the article, it was used in reference to children who take care of their parents. The whole idea of someone being called a "caregiver", however, is a bit alien to Spanish speaking culture. It's kinda obvious, at least for us, that if your parents are elderly you're going to take care of them, so we don't need a special word for this role.

social worker = trabajador social

I would say "esta persona ya esta muy mayor y no puede vivir solo/a" If you are talking to people you don't know. I wouldn't use viejo/a or anciano/a because it sound a little rude.

If you are talking to friends or people you know, you can say " Este viejito/a ya no puede vivir solo/a por su edad.

adding the ito ending to (viejo) makes it sound more affective.

I can't think of a word describing a caregiver in spanish. We would normally say " Yo cuido viejitos or personas mayores" or " mi trabajo es cuidar gente mayor".

"Cuidador de gente mayor" is also correct correct but I have never heard somebody using this expression.
