Hi Mark--This is a wonderful article that students and we teachers should read. I have gotten so sick (American English) of social media that I hardly do it except for certain situations. I can't believe the research about clicking "like" all the time! I don't do it because I think it's just plain stupid.

And now, of course, we've got our favorite, healthy food place teaching English: I'm loving this or that. I keep telling my students that loving (hating, liking) are not verbs. Officially, they don't exist as correct English.

I agree with you. Social media and commercials (and ads) have their place in language learning, but students should not only focus on Social Media Talk.

Hey Mark, don't you wish we could write more original articles for italki again?

All the best,
Ilene

I like social media, I have tightened up my FaceBook account to the point that is is closed to anyone "outside" of my friends list. I like the Internet for language learning as it provides us with limitless input for learning languages. I use YouTube for language input, and 80% of my YouTube videos are language learning related. I always ask the question to myself when subscribing to a new YT channel. "Will this YT channel teach me / help me with my languages?" I regularly edit my list of YT channels and delete any that I think no longer work or help me. I must admit that I do not indulge in any other of the internet social medias. I use language exchange via the Internet on a daily basis and some language learning Apps.
