职业教师Living rough: What it means to be homeless?
Growing up, our house was very small, my dad and my family lived in a small village in the mountains located 30 km away from the city. Back then, I didn’t appreciate having a small roof in my head or know what is the importance of having a roof under your head. As a young girl, I didn’t know much about the world as I do now. I guess time can make you wiser.
Why did I recall my childhood? I watched some documentaries lately about “homeless” young people in Brighton UK. It was tough to watch, there were minutes of curiosity and then moments when a tear fell to my cheek. In my country, homelessness is common, but I didn't expect to see it in first world countries, not firsthand but documentaries. I am trying to learn as much as I can, from the story of each character, each person in that documentary. They were not playing a role in a movie, its real life. One of the women was telling how cold it was that night, and she woke up with her tent soaking wet, even her clothes are wet.
Each of those women I saw living on the streets could actually be us. They once had a job, a home and family but at some point things got screwed up. We all experienced low points in our lives, like my story when I was a kid, but we manage to bounce back. There are people who had a rough time, a tougher time than most of us. Be kind, be grateful even for the little things.
To whoever is reading this and you are experiencing a tough time, remember to bounce back and keep on going.

I grew up in foster homes because my parents were unable to take care of me and I've been so close to being homeless when I was 18. I am lucky and thankful that I have a roof above my head. We must learn to appreciate the things we have no matter how small it can be and stop worrying about petty things.

@Gah Dutra I have also watched a lot of documentaries about Brazil and yes you are one of the lucky ones.

@Richard - When I was a kid I used to be ashamed of our house because it was so small. But when we grow up and become adults, we have to learn to be grateful for what we have, small or big because others might not have what we have.

Hi Florian K,
here in Brazil there are millions of unemployed people and it is very sad...
It's quite common see them asking for money in traffic. I am considered a lucky person, because I have my own apartment (I don't live of rental ), food, clothes, etc.
