Hello, everyone. My name is Lisa. I'm brand new here and I'm learning Turkish. I know "olmak" means "to be", but I don't see it used often where you would use "to be" in English. I was wondering in what common contexts you could use "olmak" in. If you could give examples with sentences and translations, that would be awesome. Thank you.
Hi Lisa. We dont use "olmak" alone in a sentence very much. Only verb you can use with it is "to want" It comes before "istiyorum or istemiyorum"
Like: Doktor olmak istiyorum - i want to be a doctor. or: Hasta olmak istemiyorum - i dont wanna be sick.
When you use it alone, your sentence doesnt have a verb:
Hasta olmak çok kötü(dür) - Being sick is very bad. Zengin olmak güzeldir - Being rich is good.
Another one is, you use it with " should " : Başarılı olmak için çok çalışmalısın - you should work hard to be successfull.
Last one is, you use it in order sentences:
Başarılı olmak için çok çalış! - work hard to be successfull! sağlıklı olmak için spor yap! - workout or do sports to be healthy.
