Tales or myths of your country

I'm very curious to know more about the folklore in another countries. Here in Brazil we have tales about the Chupacabra, Cuca and Saci, for example. The Chupacabra is an animal which drinks sheep blood at night. He looks like a wild hound, I believe. Cuca is a witch with a shape body of an alligator and she eats little kids. Saci is the most unique, in my opinion. He is a dark skinned kid with just one leg and a pipe in his mouth. He's like a brazilian leprechaun. He hides things and plays tricks with animals and humans.
That's what I can say briefly about brazilian folklore. And what can you tell me about your people? =)

Ahah, i've heard word "Chupacabra" many times and thought that it was some kind of joke, random set of sounds:)  Thank u for this post, i really liked it :)

In russian folklore all fairy-tales has a good ending. We have gold fish that fulfils wishes, brave heroes like Ilya Muromets(for them we have special genre named "bylina") and so on. Their antagonists are Baba-Yaga (witch in Russian folk-tales), Koschei (the deathless, cos his death is well-hidden: in the needle, needle is in the egg, egg is in the duck, duck is in the hair, hair is in the box, box is burried under the tree on the island),etc.

Furthermore, we have some kind of spirits. For example, Vodyanoy(water-sprite reigns in water), Leshiy(wood-goblin - in the forest), they are mostly kind to good people. But these are mostly fairy-tales now, i don't think that someone still believes in wood-goblins and so on.

But some people still believe that in house we have some kind of house-spirit, Domovoy, little old man who protects our house, helps to keep it and sometimes hides our clothes, keys and so on. In such situations we put somewhere small liqueur glass with alcohol for him and..one day later easily find what we need :D Such a cute tradition.

And of course, regions have their own small legend about people who died there, like phantoms of brides and so on, children like such stories.

Here in Uruguay in rural areas ,they believe in chupacabra

(Spanish pronunciation: [tʃupaˈkaβɾa], from chupar "to suck" and cabra "goat", literally "goat sucker")

a mythical being that attacks  and drinks the blood  of different animals ( we really don´t have many goats here).
