Unfortunately, that sort of thing happens all over the net. Please don't be discouraged. There are some really great people on this site  but you have to take your time and get to know them in a way you are most comfortable with.  Remember you're in control of how close someone gets to you online and don't be afraid to let them know your rules.  

I think not only via skype, but also via email and message can be also dangerous because I have been asked for $1,400 from a stranger from this site. 

First, he contacted me and said that he was interested in Japanese culture, so we started exchanging messages and emails for a while.  Then, he suddenly said he would go overseas to collect a large quantity of money which his father left for him in a secuity trust. What he said next was that he had misplaced his bag and needed money for his hotel bill.  All of this happened within a month since he contacted me first time. 

He might be really in the situation and I feel sorry for him if it was the case.  However, I felt very strange and I seriously doubt it because he was never interested in talking about our culture or languages, but he was always interested in his business and money.  At the end, I stopped replying him, but I wonder if anyone thinks he was genuine.

There are some scammers in Italki too. I found two people did such thing. The first one is the guy from Armenia pretending to learn my language, he sent me messages in italki and it didn't seem like he wanted to harm me because the conversation was normal and very polite. After replying his messages for several time he asked my email to make the conversation much easier. so I told him my e-mail and suddenly he became so strange talking about everything to get my sympathy in a way to get money. but I became suspicious instead. I checked his e-mail address on scammer list....ha I was right that he was a scammer and I reported to Italki straight away.

The second one is getting so ovious. She/he is the person who claimed himself as an African princess looking for relationship hahahah I reported him/her to italki's staff wkwkwkwkw

I agree that you should be careful when chatting on skype and meeting with people, but its not the chatting thats dangerous, its what information you give that could be the problem. Just be smart about what you are doing. Scammers are very easy to spot, but even if they are not, you shouldnt give anyone information or money. Just be smart and there is no danger.
