Motivation

Hi everyone! I'd be very curious to hear how you stay motivated. I’m guessing most of us start new tasks, i.e. learning a new langue, very enthusiastically. Unfortunately, with time this excitement usually fades. What helps you stay focussed?

From my experience, the reason you lose your interist or even give up doing something is lack of confidence and failure. By contrast, achievement, no matter how small it is, encourage and motivate you to keep doing what you want.

To get the feeling of achievement, I would suggest you to do a rough plan for getting your final goal with small and do-able steps. And even smaller things you need to do to get through those steps. Doing such a plan can make you feel on track, avoiding the feeling of flailure. However keep the big picture in mind all the time and do not forget your initial desire!

Good luck with everyone's goals!

I use these simple steps to learn new things to which I came across in James Clear blog...

1. Whatever you want to achieve keep it simple and small in starting days, so small that you can't say no to doing it and it should be easy to make a start.

2. Increase your work or habit time each day but in an incredibly small way.

3. Even after increasing your habit, it should remain easy to do it.

The key here is to perform these small tasks each day and keep up increasing its timing in a gradual manner, we want to develop this new learning process as a HABIT and eventually this habit will become your BEHAVIOUR and when it become your behaviour, you don't need anymore motivation or will power to accomplish your tasks.

This approach helped me a lot to acquire new habits.

I think you have to be able to distinguish the things you really think are important to you from those you'd like to do for weak reasons.

How can you do that? You have to serioulsy ask yourself why you want to begin that activity. And if you find out that the reason is not sufficently strong, reasonable, true and just to you you'll probably end up giving up.

A personal example: I was able to quit the Internet for an entire month because I knew when I decided to do it that it was the right thing to do for ME at that time. I wasn't doing it for others, only for me. It was REALLY hard, but the emotion that made me start never left me throughout the process because I knew that I was doing something right.

I think that when you try to do something to feel important or to be recognized ("Hey! Look at me, I can do something!") you'll never go the distance. Those activites are fueled by temporary emotions.

I hope this advice resonates with your experiences!

Hi Aneta:

Good subject.  I may be a little different than some.

Many require a kind of very emotional enthusiasm  before they can start something new.

I somethings have to put something aside for a time,  like weeks, or months, until all the emotionality is removed from a subject, so that I can see it clearly and work with it.

Ah, I hope some people do not read this, especially my current employer, but.., I want a new job.

More management and client interaction. I have a better chance in getting that when I got some language certs. I am also doing some other studies by the way. (Information science and project management.)
