To answer your query, Marina, it is - but we never call it 'oatmeal' here. 'Oatmeal' is the American English term. We call it 'porridge'. And yes, slow-release carbohydrate with sugar, honey - or more traditionally with salt - is the best thing to keep you going on a cold morning.

Pigs in blankets - little cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon, often eaten at Christmas.

Stinking bishop - incredibly smelly cheese.

Jellied eels - Exactly as they sound, a bit gross, a bit old fashioned nowadays.

99 - an ice cream cone with soft vanilla ice cream and a chocolate flake.

Cockles and winkles - little shellfish

Bakewell tart - almond and jam pastry dish (don't call it a tart in the Peak District in England though, the locals will get offended! Bakewell pudding there).

Sandwiches - (apparently) invented by the Earl of Sandwich who wanted something convenient to eat with one hand so he could continue playing cards.

Coronation chicken - a sandwich filler invented to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in the 1950s (when she was given her crown) made of chicken, raisins, curry powder and mayonnaise.

Shepherds pie - minced lamb and veg topped with mashed potato.

Cottage pie - minced beef and veg topped with mashed potato.

Cornish pasty - a meal in pastry case invented for miners I think.

Devilled kidneys - lambs kidneys cooked in spices.

That's all from the top of my head, and now I want a 99! :)

Tripe and onions, http://nosetotailathome.com/2009/03/29/tripe-and-onions/ make up your own mind people either love it or hate it (I hate)

Mushy peas, they are minted peas, (served with fish and chips),http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/1925/mushy-peas.aspx (same feeling as above!)

Sago poudding, looks like frog spawn, but I love it! http://asiasociety.org/blog/asia/sago-pudding-gula-melaka

Black puddings (made from blood) say no more

Probably most curious of all Scottish delicacies

Deep-fried chocolate mars bars! (says it all, people really eat them, but not me)

and Christmas mincemeat pies (it is not meat, this is what is curious! It has fruit and they are a sweet pie) http://www.joyofbaking.com/MincePies.html yummy

Porrige, haggis and deep fried mars bar, three wonderful Scottish delights you can write about. I've never actually tried the mars bar, but haggis and porrige are absolutely delicious.

Welsh cakes. They are similar to English scones.
