Dutch questions to help you learn Dutch

During my sessions on italki, teaching Dutch to some of my students, I got some questions regarding learning to ask people to repeat what they just said, or to say that you didn't hear it clearly, and so on. So therefore I decided to give you a bunch of useful sentences that you can use to learn Dutch during a conversation. We all have those moments whereby someone says something and all you hear is an endless string of sounds that you cannot distinguish. It is important to ask people to repeat what they said, or say it in other words. Ok, here we go.

Ik begrijp het niet. - I do not understand.

Kun je dat herhalen, alsjeblieft? - could you repeat that please?

Ik kan je niet goed verstaan - I cannot understand you very well. (Because they speak unclear or the sound is of low unclear quality).

Ik kan je niet goed horen - I cannot hear you well.

Ik ken dat laatste woord niet - I do not know the last word.

Wat betekent .......? - What does ..... mean?

Wat betekent dat? - What does that mean?

Ik begrijp wat je bedoelt - I get what you mean.

Ik begrijp niet wat je bedoelt - I do not get what you mean.

Sorry, (maar) het is mij nog steeds niet helemaal duidelijk..- sorry but it still isn't clear yet(still do not entirely get it)

Kun je dat anders zeggen? - can you say that in a different way?

Kun je dat op een andere manier zeggen? - can you say that in a different way?

Kun je dat vertalen, alsjeblieft? Can you translate that please?

Wat betekent dat in het Engels? - What does that mean in English?

So these are some phrases you can use to improve your Dutch conversational skills. If you have any other questions that you think you might need to ask to improve your learning, leave a comment :)
