there is, there are

In "Bambi", Bambi's mothere told him: "There are no trees or bushes to hide us." The proper English is, "There is no tree or bush to hide us"However, you can expect a doe to speak perfect English.

My question 1 is can I say: "There isn't any tree or bush to hide us." Yes.

Question 2: How to use "there is no……" and "there are no ……" ?In the traditional sense, the following should have a singular form after "no".  "There is no one".  Nowadays, there is another school of thought that you can have plural after "no".  Just make sure the verb agrees with the nouns.  I am a purist.  So I follow the first rule.  Also it is better to follow the traditional rule when taking tests!

Thank you.

There are no trees or bushes to hide us

         aren't

         aren't any

If you are talking in the singular then you can say

There isn't any tree or bush to hide us

There is no tree - singular, referring to one object

There are no trees - plural, referring to multiple objects
