Making sentences with new words
In preparing for my CPE exam I come across many new words daily. I would like to use the words I learnt today to make some sentences os it will help me to memorise them.
1. Deference
He took off his hat out of deference to the bereaved family.
The new boss is wearing red in deference to the home fans of the football club that he recently bought.
2. Ploy
It was all a purposeful poly to convince you to invest in their company.
3.Adverse
Taking two part-time jobs while studying at the university has had an adverse effect on her exam result.
Her exam result has been adversely affected by the two part-time jobs that she keeps.
Here another possibility:
The couple’s marriage was falling apart. She loved him and pleaded for him not to leave. He didn’t want to leave either but he also knew that his love for her had died. In this complicated state of unhappiness, he was able to make a conscious plan to comply with her wishes in order to keep her happy. Unfortunately – because he was going against his heart – this ploy of deference had an adverse effect on their marriage, and they eventually separated.
I’m not sure if this example is entirely true to the definitions of the words you wanted to explore, but I think it comes close. I tried to set up a scenario that would lead me to be able to use all three words in the same sentence, and there are probably better situations that could have taken me to the same thing. This is just the first one that came into my head. It was fun. Maybe you could try one as well – it would certainly be a good exercise in playing with the language. Good luck with your studies.
