I would imagine that prepostitions will seem backwards when you start learning them, because I have the same trouble with postpositions in Hindi. I usually have to read the phrase with the postposition right to left to make sense of it.  Prepositions and postpositions work very similarly.  They both show how things are related (The book ON the shelf).

Let me write some sentences with prepositions and see if I can help you understand them.

Today I went to the park with my sister and my two nieces.

The basic sentence is "I went." There are two phrases (prepositional phrases) that tell more about what I did.  

Where did I go?  to the park.  

"to" is a preposition. "to the park" is a prepositional phrase.

Whom did I go with? with my sister and my two nieces

"with" is a preposition. "with my sister and my two nieces" is a prepositional phrase.

Now I will make a sentence and try to add prepositional phrases to them.

I jumped.

Where did I jump from?

A rock.

Where did I jump to?

The water.

So here are two ways to combine these: "I jumped from the rock into the water," or "I jumped from the rock to the water."

There are many prepositions, but I'll list some of them here: from, to, with, above, near, about, for, until, before, since, etc
