TOEFL independent writing People today spend too much time on personal enjoyment-doing things they like to do- rather than doing thigs they should do Some people believe that nowadays we waste too much time doing things we like to do instead of doing things we are supposed to do, others disagree. In my opinion, people do not spent too much time enjoying their spare time. I feel this way for two main reasons, which I will explore in the following essay. First of all, our generations is usually poorer than the previous one. Because of the financial crisis that occured in the last decade people have less money than before. To be more specific, the standard of the life has decreased because of the lack of money. Nowadays many family struggle in order to pay the rent, the bills and the food. As a result, they prefer to avoid any kind of entratainment that is not necessary. My own experience is a compelling example of this. Two years ago I moved to another city and I decided to buy an house. I dediced to get a mortage. At the beginning it was really hard to manage to repay it because I had to save lot of money. I was used to go the cinema twice a week and to go eat out once a week. I had to eliminate these kind of enjoyments in order to put money apart. Secondly, in today's world working time has increased a lot, indeed many people work 9-10 hours at day. When they finish to work, they have the shopping to do, the cleaning and so fourth. As a result, they have less free time to spend doing what they enjoy. My father's experience is an example of this. He had worked in a company for years. Last year he was asked to became the CEO of the company. Althought becoming a CEO represents one of the most ambitious personal reward, at the beggining he hesitated because he knew that it would have lead to less spare time for himself since the CEO has lot of work to do and lot of responsabilities. In the end, he decided to accept the position because our family was short of money. If you ask him now, he will say you that he regretted to accept that position because he love running and used to run marathon, but now he does not have the time to do it anymore. In conclusion, I strongly believe that people are not waste time doing things they like to do. This is because they cannot afford to do many things due to the poorer salary, and because they have less free time since working time has increased.
