Note, I am trying to practice "Is X a Y?" type patterns.

Depending on the dialect you're using I would go with...
"yw/ydy hi'n fam?"
"Ydw/Ydy, mae hi'n fam."
"Nag ydyw. Dyw/Dydy hi ddim yn fam"
