Interesting translation of brand names(English to Chinese)
“Sprite” is a lemon flavored soft drink of Coca-Cola Company. “Sprite” originally means energetic demon. Its potential consumers are those who are young, lovely and active. But it used to be translated into “事必利”which means everything must go well. Though the Chinese people prefer something auspicious like the number 8 that have a similar pronunciation with the word “发”(being rich)in Chinese, the Chinese consumers were not interested in the first translator’s good intention. How did it happen in this way? It is because “Sprite” has been oriented at the young market. Its target consumers are the young people. Generally, the young are less likely to believe in that something auspicious can bring them good luck. They tend to like something positive, stylish and passionate. So the name “雪碧”is exactly what they want. “雪碧”shows that after they have this kind of drink, they will feel cool especially in the overwhelming summer.
It is no doubt that since the Chinese brand name was substituted, “Sprite” has become increasingly popular among the young consumers.
“Mild Seven”, made by Japan Tobacco Inc, has been selling like hot cakes worldwide as hot as “555” and “Marlboro”, especially among ladies for its moderate taste and subtle smell. It is widely known as “七星”in China. However, it used to be named as“万事发”.Obviously, the former one is better than the latter. Firstly, “万事”is one of the Chinese people’s taboos for the reason that it makes them think of the unlucky words like “多事之秋”or “东窗事发”which all mean the unexpected accidents keep happening. That is never what the Chinese consumers expect regardless of the first translator’s intention to wish everything thrive. But “七星”is derived from the Number “7”. From the Japanese’s perspective, “7” is a lucky number. They believe in that “7” can keep them safe and happy. So they retranslated “Mild Seven” into “七星”,which not only sounds good to the Chinese, but also show the Japanese culture around the globe. The retranslation of “Mild Seven” is in time and correct, because they realized they could not put the cultural background and national psychology of the target language country aside if they expected bigger success.
