I'm not sure what the author of this phrase meant, but I'd interpret it as someone saying one should set goals without comparing themselves to others, even if that could be detrimental in some way for the person setting the goal. But honestly, It's a weird phrase haha.

Before paraphrasing, a few things need to be clarified. Without comparison to what? Does the clause "potentially to your detriment" refer to COMPARISON or ASIPRE?
