I can find a lot of rules about quotation marks, but still can't answer my question - should commas go inside or outside quotation marks in American English if I list some short quotes? For example: If to look at the replies under the company's previous tweet about the metaverse, you can see responses such as "this is deeply disappointing," "I won't buy this game if it's NFT," "I lost interest in the game," etc.

Well i have heard that periods go inside the quotation, so same might be true for commas. However, few days back i was drafting a brief and i asked my senior this question and he replied, "Do u really think the judge is going to take note that u placed commo outside rather inside?"

Hi Sasha! If you are listing short quotes, the comma goes outside the quotation marks. As you probably know, when we list things in English, each item needs a comma after it (except for the penultimate item). The correct format for your sentence above would be: You can see responses such as: "This is deeply disappointing", "I won't buy this game if it's NFT", "I lost interest in the game", etc. We include commas INSIDE the quotation marks if the quote is being split up. For example: "This is deeply disappointing," replied one of the players. Besides this case, we wouldn't include a comma at the end of a phrase in quotation marks otherwise, even if it is included in the original text. I hope this is clear!

Hi Sasha, as far as I know, commas always go inside quotation marks. I found a website that says commas and periods only go outside the quotation marks if there is a reference in parentheses after the quotation. This is the example they give: Mullen, criticizing the apparent inaction, writes, "Donahue's policy was to do nothing" (24). This is the website if you want to take a look: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/punctuation/quotation_marks/more_quotation_mark_rules.html Good luck!
