There are two different meanings. Commonly it is an adjective, pronounced with a schwa sound for the "a," "moderӘt," "moderit." It means "not too big, not too small, but in middle." It carries the feeling of not going too far. It suggests being careful, prudent, wise, and restrained. Here are some examples of use.
"Economists say that high inflation, like 10%/year, is bad, but that moderate inflation, like 2%/year, is actually good."
"Don't try to lose weight too quickly. Experts recommend a moderate rate, such a 1 kg per week."
"Climbing Mount Washington is extreme, but Mount Monadnock is just a moderate climb."
"Within the XYZ political party, politician A is an extremist but politician B is a moderate."
"Moderation" is the noun form, with the same meaning. "Don't drink too much, don't eat too much, don't party too much--all things in moderation."
There is also a verb, "to moderate." The "A" has a long-A sound, -rate being just like the word "rate." It means "to calm things down" or "hold them back." To "moderate" an Internet forum means to prevent things from getting angry, by removing posts or banning troublesome posters. The "moderator" of a meeting directs the procedure and makes sure it follows the "rules of order" or "parliamentary procedure" so that it doesn't become an angry argument.
