Actually there are many rules and exceptions on when to use each word, so I will give you the most basic meanings of each word. Da = from / by Di = from a = to / at per = for / in order to Examples: Io vengo DAL (= da + il) dottore (I'm coming from the doctor's office.) Io sono di Cina. (I am from China). Io sono di Cina ma vengo DAgli Stati Uniti (I am from China, but I am coming from the United States) Questo libro e' per te. (This book is for you.) Studio la musica per fare la musicista (I'm studying music in order to become a musician) Sono all'uninversita'. (all' = a+la)

I add some other common cases. di = of (property, material) Il libro di Marco (Marco's book) Io sono di Venezia (from, almost "I belong to") Un tavolo di legno (a table made of wood) It implies some kind of belonging/relation. a = at (time) Ci vediamo alle nove (see you at nine) Ne parliamo a pranzo (we'll talk about this at lunch) Introduce a place, in space or time. Less common a = with/of some specific kind Un vestito a fiori (a dress with a flower motive) Un film a colori (a colourful, not B&W, movie) Una barca a vela (a sailing boat) da = since Non ci vediamo da agosto (we have not met since august) Implies a distance from a place/time. Less common da = for Un cane da caccia (a dog for hunting, an hunting dog) Un cappello da cuoco (a cook's hat) There are a few less common cases and exception, used most in spoken language. Some common "idoms" Di solito = usually Di fronte: in front of Per esempio: For example Per favore/piacere: please Di mattina, di notte, di giorno, di sera, di giovedi'=In the morning, by night, ecc.
