Since the comments were sarcastic, they could have been delivered with a bitter, sharp or hurtful intent in a way that mocked or made fun of something. Or the comments could just have been full of irony. So without the full context, it is hard to say which of the following two usages of hit home are right in this case. Hit home - to make abundantly clear to someone Hit home - to emotionally or mentally hurt or upset someone through oral or written comments which point out weaknesses So, what he said either (1) made his point of view really clear through the use of irony or derision, or (2) what he said not only made his point of view clear, but it was personally hurtful to the listener.

Hit home means "one understands the relevance based on one's past experiences"
