What is the "Knock-Knock" joke? "Knock-knock", "who's there?", "blablabla....." some kinds of jokes like this have been showed in several American movies, like "The Persuit Of Happiness" and " The Big Bang Theory". What does it exactly mean?

Basically, it's a set-up for a pun. Here's a classic: Knock, knock! Who's there? Doris. Doris Who? Doris locked (=the door is locked), that's why I'm knocking! *groan*

Knock Knock Who's there? Aardvark! Aardvark who? Aardvark [ I'd walk] a hundred miles for one of your smiles!
