The quick way to do so is to to use the ALT key
Hold it down while entering one of the codes below
ä = 0228 Ä = 0196
ö = 0246 Ö = 0214
ü = 0252 Ü = 0220
ß = 0223
The more elegant way is to set you keyboard properties to German,
here you will find a detailed instruction, how to do this.

On an Ipad , I think you have to hold the A key for something like a second.
Not sure , about this at all. I know little about Apple products , i think they are overprieced and restrict my options (Hard-,Software as well as settings ) It´s like buying a car with a welded hood ( brit. bonnet ) The design is rather nice.
