I think your question has been answered by Cathrine & M3L1A, so in short amboi=wow, but amboi is never used anymore, now instead of people already use the word wow. And if you if say amboi today in 2012, people around you definitely ask "what year did you come from my man ? " hahahah :)

'Amboi' is like some kind of expression it means : "Wow" (possitive) example: *Amboi! Cantik sekali! (Wow, it's so beautiful!) where exactly that you live now in Indonesia? Surabaya? I don't think Surabaya people said that words :D *peace*

''Amboi'' mean good/nice ( more like a figure of speech) like .... oh amboi sekali : oh'' that's so good'' or oh ''how pretty that wedding dress'' but it's ancient sayings .. rarely used maybe,still used in the prose-prose, poetry or couplets
