There (was VS were) so many things.
SCRIPT
Bree: "I have. I was so afraid you were gonna die.
#1. There were so many things I haven’t had a chance to tell you."
#2. There was so many things I haven't had a chance to tell you."
QUESTION
Both scripts say differently. One appears 'was' while the other 'were.'
Actually I guess "there was/were" issue depended on what kind of word which is placed right after "was/were" would be.
ex) There is a bird -> Cleary "is" would be used because of "a bird."
Therefore, for the script, due to "so many thingS,"
I figure there "were" would be correct. (#1)
Did I guess rightly? or Am i wrong?
I'd like to listen to your answer. Thank you !

You are correct. "I was hoping I would get that package today." "THEY were hoping they would get that package today." I think this is what you are talking about. If someone actually said #2 they were wrong. Many native speakers make that mistake.

Your guess is correct. "was" is used for only one thing, while "were" is used for two or more things. The difference between the two verbs is the number of people/things that they express.
