What does this mean exactly? "I stand only to gain by it." I don't fully understand this expression: I stand only to gain by it. I suppose it means "I want only to be rewarded for it" but if this is the meaning why they are using the verb "stand" here? This sentence is from a novel I'm translating. Could someone explain it to me please, thanks.

If this happens or I do this, the only results for me will be good. I may not know all the possible results, but I am certain that none of them will be bad - at least for me.

You stand to gain means you have very little chance of losing.For example you enter into a venture wherein you know that you will make good profit which means that you can't lose and you will win then you can say, I do not stand to lose OR I stand to gain.
